![]() ![]() NetLogo Web duplicates the NetLogo Desktop modeling environment in a web browser. It is available as a desktop download or web-based version, which begs the question: Which version should you use? NetLogo was created by Uri Wilensky in 1999 and has been developed at the Center for Connected Learning and Computer-Based Modeling at Northwestern University with bug fixes, translations into more languages, and an expanded model library. Most of NetLogo's online resources are dominated by computer science departments and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects, but it can be applied much more widely for things including art, music, and philosophy. Looking at the library models' source code is a great way to learn and using and adapting the modules is also helpful. Its web-based user manual is a great place for English speakers to get started, and versions in Chinese, Czech, Japanese, and Spanish are linked from NetLogo's homepage. But there are many other ways to learn it. ![]() My first exposure to NetLogo was when I took Introduction to Complexity from the Santa Fe Institute. ![]() It is easy to experiment by varying the model parameters, rather than just pressing go and seeing what a developer or instructor wants you to see. Learning about NetLogoĪs an educational technologist, what I like most about NetLogo is its interactivity. Users can write their own extensions or add existing ones available in the core program or in the GitHub repository. Be aware that some haven't been migrated to the latest NetLogo version and little-used ones may never be. They enable users to add the features they want without cluttering the core program with things most users won't need. The upside to this shortcoming is you'll come across many interesting models during your hunt that you would otherwise have missed.Įxtensions can expand NetLogo's functionality with new commands and features in Java and other languages. It can take a while to find what you are looking for in the built-in model library because there is no search and the organizing principles are not very easy to follow. NetLogo's Disease Solo model of an infection spreading. NetLogo includes an extensive library of models that cover a wide range of phenomena from the physical, natural, and social sciences, and there are other community-generated models available. It's best suited for small-scale models rather than large-scale, detailed, and complex agent-based modeling tasks. Using NetLogo's interface tools, students can alter a model's parameters and monitor the effects of those changes using graphical displays of changing key values. There are two versions available: NetLogo Desktop, a downloadable version that runs on Linux, MacOS, and Windows, and NetLogo Web. NetLogo runs on a Java virtual machine and uses a modified version of the Logo programming language, so a lot of people will be familiar with its terminologies, such as turtles and lists. It's a great way to learn how to develop small, agent-based model simulations and explore how large and small changes can affect an environment. NetLogo is an open source, cross-platform tool that enables users to model a wide variety of natural and social phenomena (including biology, chemistry, computer science, economics, physics, psychology, art, and much more). ![]() ![]() ![]()
![]() Pages can also be rotated at a later point in the workflow in case of mistakes or recalcitrant bindings. The system can handle multi‑page scores, and there’s no particular need to scan them dead straight. PhotoScore offers you tips about optimum scanning settings, and these are of absolutely vital importance if you’re to enjoy success. (Not that I had performed a flatbed scan, I realised, for perhaps half a decade before undertaking this review). Clicking the Scan Pages button opens a floating window that in Mac OS, at least, gives you familiar OS‑level functionality. Most work in PhotoScore centres around its single main window. The potential time savings are huge: how is it in practice? Scans & Scores The software has some editing and basic engraving/printing facilities of its own, too, so can stand alone for many jobs. That can be passed on to Sibelius (directly), to other notation applications via MusicXML or NIFF export, or to your DAW as MIDI. It then extracts pitch, rhythm, lyrics, guitar tab and more, turning it into live notation data. The software provides a flatbed scanning interface, imports PDFs and other graphics files, and accepts handwritten symbols through touch‑enabled tablets and laptops. That’s where PhotoScore & NotateMe Ultimate, the subject of this review, comes in: it’s essentially optical character recognition (OCR) for music. The ease with which beautifully proportioned, accurately laid‑out scores can be generated and manipulated would have been unthinkable even 50 years ago.Īt the same time, they can be horribly labour‑intensive, and copying existing printed music is particularly tedious. Let Neuratron take the misery out of copying musical notation.Įngraving and scoring applications like Sibelius, Musescore, Dorico and Finale are one of the wonders of the modern age for musicians. There are tiny errors in the live notation (like the missing grace note next to the highlighted note), easy to spot against the display of the original scan at the top, but overall the accuracy is excellent. It took about 5 seconds to generate this detailed, clean notation from a printed original scan. ![]() ![]() So there's a python to Siri's and there's a python three. It was first introduced in 1991 which makes it 25 years old. So Python is actually a pretty old programming language. So if you if you haven't seen search for the Holy Grail or the Life of Brian, go do it. If you didn't know Python is actually named after Monty Python, who's made some great films. There's a few different frameworks for python that we could use, So we're gonna explore three of them. ![]() We're actually gonna be building multiple graphical tools because there are a few different graphical or gooey GeoEye. We're gonna be building a Web scraper and graphical utility. So, for instance, we're gonna be building ah website. And once we get past another standing of how the programming language works in the syntax and all the different stuff you do with it, we're gonna move on to actually programming riel applications on showing you guys different practical applications of the python programming language. Ah, discussing you know what's an interpreter? What? How do you run a python script and then get into the language itself? Now the language is different, but it's easy. So we're gonna we're going to jump into the language here in a few videos, but we need to do a few things 1st 1st we need to discuss what Python is, and then we need to get it installed, and then we can start. So the main differences between python and other languages, like C Plus Plus or C or Jabba, is that python is built around two main focal points, which I believe are code readability and simplicity. Ah, really great way of understanding what a programming language is and how to use one. But a lot of times this offers people who have no experience programming. It does have some limitations, and sometimes this is not the right tool for the job. But this would be your first programming language, and this is a great programming language to start with. This course is gonna be aimed at somebody who may have basic knowledge about what a programming language is. And welcome to the python course that we're gonna be doing now. Publishing network Īs of May 2017, Epic! had 250 publisher and video provider partners, including HarperCollins, Macmillan, Candlewick, National Geographic Kids, Smithsonian Enterprises and Encyclopædia Britannica. Users can search for books, videos and quizzes on Epic! based on age, keyword and reading levels. The Epic! app offers personalized recommendations based on a child's reading level and interest. Books are available in English, Spanish, Chinese, and French and includes bilingual options. Titles and series include BIG NATE, Garfield, Warriors and The Chronicles of Narnia series. As for the public domain classic without any pictures, those could always come in handy when putting your kids to sleep.Books are available in read-to-me and audiobook formats and include both non-fiction and fiction titles, covering a subjects and themes such as: STEM, language arts, social science, history, music, art, science fiction and DIY. With a growing library and active app development, the service should keep improving over time. Parents of kids 4 to 12 who have an iPad should definitely check out the free trial, and if it gets your kids to read more, the monthly price is worthwhile. Most of the catalog looks just like you’d expect children’s books to look on paper. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen a children’s edition of Aesop’s Fables without illustrations before now-Epic suggests it for ages 3 to 5, but it’s just 179 pages of text, not a single drawing or picture. The font is about what you’d expect from a Kindle book for adults, and with just black justified text on stark white pages, the presentation is so boring that the story loses a little magic. For example, the classic Rikki-Tikki-Tavi by Rudyard Kipling has an age recommendation of 6 to 8, but it’s entirely without pictures. Some of the books you’ll remember from your own childhood are sadly unadorned. No pictures in Aesop’s Fables? Say it ain’t so! There’s no search function, since chances are everyone would search for Harry Potter, which Epic doesn’t have (yet?). You can isolate age groups, and scroll through Netflix-like categories such as Mysteries, Sports, Nonfiction, Fantasy, Picture Books, and so on. While the selection is large and mostly decent, it’s set up for general browsing more than finding something specific. If you tap the top of the book, it goes back out to the control page, where you can drop in a bookmark if you aren’t going to finish the book all at once. All you can do when reading a book in full-screen mode is zoom in and out with a finger-pinch. This is a reading app for reading-the books aren’t animated, and they don’t read the story to you. The collection is curated by Epic’s experts in children’s literature, so the selection is pretty quality, although the first book my own son selected is nothing but a picture book of various donut varieties. ![]() That also means you need a network connection, but you can save books for offline reading, so they’re always available on the go. The books stream, so they load instantly with no waiting for a download. Parents can see how much their kids are reading, which books they’re looking at, and all the badges they’ve earned. Besides earning badges, reading books unlocks extra options for customizing your profile: extra avatars, patterns, and themes. Of course, kids earn lots of badges by simply reading books, but also by customizing their profiles and using the app’s other features, like rating a book or adding it to their favorites list. The badges are adorable, a great way of gamifying reading for the kids. ![]() ![]() Drilling down into a child’s profile, the parent can also see exactly which books the kid has read, how much time they spent with each one, and badges they’ve earned. ![]() ![]() "Twitch Under Fire For Failing To Protect Streamer From Online Stalker".
